Massage Education & Resources |

In
most jurisdictions, including DC, Maryland, and Virginia,
massage therapists receive more specific training on soft
tissue
manipulation than any other licensed healthcare practitioner,
except for osteopaths (a special type of physician).
|
| |
|
| |
| While
physical therapists also receive extensive training in anatomy,
physiology, and physical medicine, training focuses on rehabilitative
exercises and neuromuscular re-education, rather than massage.
Also, initial chiropractic training tends to focus on manipulation
of the bony structures of the body, rather than soft tissue
manipulation, to achieve the release of muscles and soft
tissues. |

| Even
the certified massage therapist requires a significant amount
of advanced training to safely conduct Medical Massage,
as well as effectively communicate with other healthcare
professionals. This includes knowledge of: |
- Assessment Techniques
- Common
Conditions & Syndromes caused by Soft Tissue
Dysfunction
- Contraindications & Common
Pathologies
- Insurance Billing
Procedures
- Manual Therapies in addition to Swedish Massage
- Medical
& Interdisciplinary Terminology

Massage training programs range considerably, from 22 to
1,500 hours of instruction. Personally, I believe any decent
program must include
at
least 150 hours of training. I also believe that the practitioner
needs at least 1,500 hours of experience dealing with client
physical discomforts. |
